Event Calendar: The Highlights of Northern Sweden

Anyone who thinks it is quiet in the North will be surprised. From world-class sports to unique culture – our region offers top-class experiences all year round.

🌱 Spring (March – May)

Action on the ice – the Swedes' "fifth season."

  • Big Ice Fishing (Arvidsjaur & Älvsbyn): Hundreds of people on the ice, competing for the biggest catch under the bright spring sun.

  • Spring Market in Boden: A classic market to celebrate the first warm rays of sun with local products.

  • Snowmobile Cross (Boden/Älvsbyn): Experience the pros in fast-paced races on special snow circuits.

  • Piteå Winter Games: A huge sports weekend with activities on ice and snow for the whole family (approx. 45 min. drive).

  • Spring Market Arvidsjaur: Regional market focusing on handicrafts and Northern Swedish specialties.

  • Luleå Spark Race (Kicksled): A huge folk festival on the "Isbana" (ice track) in Luleå. Hundreds of participants in costumes race across the frozen sea on kicksleds (March / approx. 60 min. drive).

☀️ Summer (June – August)

Festivals, motorsport, and culture under the midnight sun.

  • Midsummer at Storforsen: The biggest celebration of the year with traditional dance and music right by the mighty rapids.

  • Piteå Dansar och Ler (PDL): One of Northern Sweden's largest street festivals with live music on many stages and a huge fairground (July).

  • Luleå Hamnfestival: Celebrate at the port of Luleå with concerts, street food, and maritime flair.

  • Storforsen Open-Air Stage: An absolute highlight. In the powerful setting of the rapids, professional open-air theater performances and concerts take place during the summer.

  • Piteå Summer Games: One of the largest youth football tournaments in the world. A massive spectacle for kids and families with international flair (end of June / approx. 45 min. drive).

  • Autocross & Rally Älvsbyn: The region is a motorsport stronghold. Experience thrilling races on local tracks like "Högheden."

🍂 Autumn (September – November)

Harvest time and the return of the Northern Lights.

  • Autumn Market Älvsbyn: The town fills with regional vendors offering berries, meat, and handicrafts from the Norrbotten region.

  • Boden Alive: A late-summer city festival in Boden with plenty of music and entertainment for all ages (approx. 40 min. drive).

  • Kulturens Hus (Luleå): Start of the major concert season with international artists and first-class theater.

  • Nattivalen (Arvidsjaur): A cozy culture festival as the nights get darker again (approx. 60 min. drive).

❄️ Winter (December – February)

Tradition, light, and the magic of the Arctic.

  • Gammelstad Christmas Market (Luleå): Experience the Advent season in the UNESCO World Heritage site among hundreds of historic church cottages (approx. 60 min. drive).

  • Piteå Winter Games: A major sports event for the whole family focusing on winter sports and community.

  • Jokkmokk Winter Market: (February) The cultural heart of Lapland. Reindeer races on the lake, Sami handicrafts, and thousands of visitors from all over the world (approx. 80 min. drive).

  • Ice Sculpture Festival (Luleå): Admire impressive artworks made of solid ice in the city center.

  • New Year's Fireworks Älvsbyn: The local community often welcomes the New Year with an impressive firework display over the river.

Tip: Many local events are often announced at short notice via Facebook groups or the official tourism pages of Älvsbyn, Destination Luleå, or Visit Piteå. Accessibility: All locations mentioned above are easily accessible within 30 to 90 minutes by car from your holiday home.
